and
Good morning everyone! I hope this will brighten your day considerably! Props to Jenny on Facebook for finding this and making my day a little brighter!
As a college student (or anyone who rents instead of owns or those who can't afford the cost) it is difficult to feel like I am making a major change in the environment. Without being able to renovate my house, I have tried to find simpler ways to make a difference. The changes that most people know about are in the same vein as change all light bulbs to CFLs, use re-usable shopping bags, reduce car emissions by carpooling or biking/walking, etc. However, there are a few other changes that most people could do to help that often get pushed aside or forgotten. For instance:
- Buy LOCAL! I can't stress this enough. Even living in a small town in the middle of no where I am able to find MANY items that are locally produced. Buying local isn't just about food (although that is where the focus tends to be) it is about utilizing local artisans and what they make. Look around for a local farmer's market or artist groups and ask!
- REDUCE and REUSE! Let's look at the first part... REDUCE. What exactly does this mean? Reduce the amount of resources you consume. Food is a resource, clothing is a resource, books are resources, everything is a resource. Buy USED products. Shop at garage sales, thrift stores, and used book stores (even better is the library). Then when you are done with something that is still in good condition, donate it so someone else can enjoy it!
Some ways to help our lovely planet fall in between the reduce and reuse. Paper towels, for example, are a convenience factor that many of us utilize but is unnecessary. If you are a woman one major change that you can make can directly impact your health and the world around you. Using cloth pads or a menstrual cup significantly reduce the amount of waste going into the environment and into your body. Gladrags.com and Lunapads.com are great websites that offer more information about these products.
Another way to reduce your waste is getting (or if you're feeling industrious making) a container for composting your kitchen scraps. Honestly, I haven't looked into composting indoors as much as outdoors but it is possible. Not only are you reducing your waste you are making very fertile soil for planting herbs, vegetables, or flowers even if that's in a window box in your apartment.
The main thing I've noticed about "going green" is that it is easier (and even though the initial cost may be more than you're used to) and more cost efficient than most people originally think. All it takes is a little more thought than what you would normally put into the action. Menstrual cycles, for instance, are a (usually) unavoidable phenomenon in women. You could go to the store and pick up a regular box of tampons or think about it and use a product that can be used multiple times. If the average box of tampons holds 20 tampons that includes the box itself, 20 applicators, 20 wraps, 20 tampons, the instructions. If you go through one box of tampons a month... just multiple all of the above by 12 and add them together.... yeah it adds up.
If everyone put just a few more minutes of thought into their daily routine, the world would be a much better (and happier!) place.

Today is my last first day of school. Possibly (though not definitely) forever. I've always loved the first day of school, yes that is a little geeky lol. I'm excited to be graduating in May and terrified of going out into the "real" world. This semester I am taking a lot of 100-200 level classes, in comparison to last semester this one will be wicked easy.
I am looking into possibly getting my teaching license and teaching high school social studies. That may be my next "goal". This semester will be very busy for me (get a job, save money, graduate), but it is totally do-able. I hope that my relationship and friendships don't suffer too much. I know that there will be some strain, but I'm hoping it isn't too bad. I know that once I get into a set schedule it won't be too bad.

"In his soul, he knew her. In his dreams, he saw her. He never envisioned a face. It always blurred if he tried to focus on it. But he could see her dressed in a robe made of dark, transparent spidersilk, a robe that slid from her shoulders as she moved, a robe that opened and closed as she walked, revealing bar, night-cool skin. And there would be a scent in the room that was her, a scent he would wake to, burying his face in her pillow after she was up and attending her own concerns.
It wasn't lust-- the body's fire paled in comparison to the embrace of mind to mind-- although physical pleasure was part of it. He wanted to touch her, feel the texture of her skin, taste the warmth of her. He wanted to caress her until they both burned He wanted to weave his life into hers until there was no telling where one began and the other ended. He wanted to put his arms around her, strong and protecting, and find himself protected; possess her and be possessed; dominate her and be dominated. He wanted that Other, that shadow across his life, who made him ache with every breath while he stumbled among these feeble women who meant nothing to him and never could.
Simply, he believed that he had been born to love her." (Anne Bishop, Daughter of the Blood-- 1st book in the Black Jewels Trilogy, pg 21-22)
---------------------------------------- ---
This passage was so well-written. Who doesn't dream of a love this passionate and strong? Even though there are dark undertones in these paragraphs, they don't override the majestic strength of the words alone. It is beautiful.

I am done. So freaking done. And now I'm going to.... uh... yeah. I haven't really figured out what I'm doing for the break. Cleaning/organizing the house I suppose. I am going to Raleigh next Thursday (Xmas eve) and leaving to come home on Sunday/Monday.
In other news, the weather is awful! We have a winter storm warning and a flood warning in effect until tomorrow. This means Lance can't visit =( because the roads are closed. It's a bummer... oh well c'est la vie!

Here is a little bit of info about the diamond skull:
Artist Damien Hirst`s Diamond Skull to Go on Tour
Tue, November 11st 2008, 05:30 EST
A $118 million diamond-encrusted skull by British artist Damien Hirst is set to tour the world’s museums. Hirst, a well-known contemporary artist, is most famous for his controversial piece featuring a tiger shark cut in half and suspended in formaldehyde.
The skull, which Hirst named For the Love of God, made its debut in June 2007 at London’s White Cube. It features 8,601 jewels and a pear-shaped pink diamond, dubbed the Skull Star Diamond, embedded in the forehead. The skull was originally purchased in north London and is thought to be from an eighteenth century European male.
For the Love of God contains over $25 million worth in diamonds, with the largest diamond weighing in at a whopping 52.5 carats.
Hirst said that he wanted to cover the skull entirely with diamonds.
“They go underneath, inside the nose. Anywhere you can put diamonds, we’ve put diamonds,” he said.
For the Love of God is thought to be the most valuable piece of the modern and contemporary art world, largely due to its stunning collection of diamonds. It was sold for $118.5 million in a private sale last year.
The diamond-encrusted masterpiece began its world tour last week. Through December 15, 2008, it will be on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The skull is currently mounted in a totally black room, and precise lighting shining off the diamonds gives it the illusion of floating in space.

It's almost the official end of the semester, and I can't wait. Instead of "normal" finals I have a lot of out of class papers and whatnot that are due during my finals time. For instance, I have a CJ paper on my experiential learning due next Thursday by noon, a poster presentation and take home test for religion magic and myth due Thursday by 5:30, and a skeletal analysis report due Monday. I have two "normal" finals, one for Taphonomy and one for Osteopathology. I'm past the point of caring... and that's not a good place for me to be =P
I hope that we can get a Yule tree soon... and I figured out what I'm getting Lance... I think he'll like it but I'm not telling what it is! Mwahahaha!

I'm not a fanatic about video games whether they be PC or console. When I was younger I played Super Mario Brothers and a couple of sports games on Super Nintendo, several games on our N64 (yes including a Star Wars game...), a couple of games on the Playstation, and Sonic the Hedgehog and Aladdin on SEGA. On PC I played Wolfenstein, Commander Keen, and the Sims. Yes my hand-eye coordination still sucks and no I don't really want to commit several hours a day to improving that.
On Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) I bought my first console (Nintendo Wii) simply because I wanted to play Super Mario Bros again. There is also a Star Wars game that I want to try out where you can use your remote as a light saber... bad ass I think so! Lance and I have spent many hours playing and then beating Super Mario Bros. We are currently working back through the game to collect all of the star coins so we can play world 9. I was never able to beat Super Mario Brothers on Super Nintendo as a kid, I think having the right partner helps ;-)
Here are a couple of things I learned about Mario:
- His name: Mario was original name Mr. Video because the designer wanted him to be present in every game that he ever created. Shigeru Miyamoto, the game designer, credits Alfred Hitchcock for the idea. Soon Mr. Video was renamed Jump Man in the original arcade version of Donkey Kong. Finally, someone suggested they name Mr. Video/Jump Man after the grumpy landlord of the American Nintendo offices. His name was Mario.
- His mustache: Miyamoto stated that the pixels were too large to form a proper mouth for Mario in the original versions. The mouth became a mustache that stuck with the character throughout his many transformations.
- His hat: Again, when the original design for Mario was created, the pixels made it difficult to design his hair... which led to his hat.
- His outfit: The red and blue overalls were to help distinguish his arms from his legs while the white gloves were supposed to make him easier to see.
Also, while doing this "research" on Mario I came across a web video that discussed video games for autistic children (no excess, but plenty of, stimulation) and video games that allow kids with illnesses such as diabetes and cancer learn about their illnesses while virtually "battling" the illness in the game.
I am very much opposed to the idea that kids don't play outside anymore and video games are a large part of that. Many video games (console AND PC) can and will suck your soul and can potential damage relationship and friendships. We are entering a very pivitol time for technology and I think it is important to keep up with new improvements and developments. But we also have to ask ourselves, what impact is this going to have on future generations? Will they learn to use their imagination or will their creative side of their brain suffer?

1. Which area(s) of genetic research interest you the most?
While I think the research done to make "designer" babies is ridiculously ludicrous, I am fascinated by epigenetics. Epigenetics looks at external factors (as in not part of the underlying gene sequence) that alter previously existing genes. We may have found an answer in nature vs. nurture through epigenetics.
2. Is there a sport that you haven't played and would like to?
I was not allowed to play football on an actual team unless it was flag football >:-( so if I could play on a team that would be great, or maybe lacrosse...
3. What is your dream destination for a vacation? What about to live in?
This is way to hard of a question! There are so many awesome places that I want to see and visit. I would love to do a tour of eastern Europe, western Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East (focusing on India, Pakistan, Turkey, and Iran), and Africa. I don't know which I would choose if I could only pick one. Money, time, and travel companions are certainly considerations. Above all my requirements for a dream vacation are to have fun and immerse myself in a new culture. I hate the typical "tourist" attitude. When I go to a place a majority of the time I don't go to see the main tourist attractions (ex: I was in NYC and didn't want to see the Statue of Liberty... I wanted to go to Greenwich Village lol). Although if I was in another country I would love to see some of their "tourist" attractions (ex: the Louvre in France, but not Eiffel tower)
I would love live in a place that has an abundance of nature, where I can retain privacy at my home, where I can find a job, where the school system is great, and where there is an abundance of culture and the arts. Also, it's not a requirement but, I would love to be close to my family (as in within a 10 hour driving distance), I want my kids to know my parents and I know that they want that too. Find me a place like that and I'll never move anywhere else lol.
4. Why does the idea of twins fascinate you?
I would love to make a joke here about buy one get one free, but that is SOOO not the case with twins. I'm not sure why I have such a fascination with twins. It could be because I believe that I need to contribute to the gene pool by adding in twins which is a variation on the typical child bearing gene. It could be because not everyone can biologically have a set of twins and I want to have that as a new status symbol. I don't really know, I just like the idea of twins.
5. What is your greatest fear?
My greatest fear at this point is probably being deceived... again. Especially now when I feel like I've gotten my life together and I'm headed down the right path. My greatest fear of all time is probably being trapped... but you already knew that =P lol
Okay, nobody really reads this but if you want to propagate with me the first 5 to comment with "resistance is futile!" will get questions from me.

The time between Samhain and Yule is one of reflection for me. At Samhain I look at my past year and speculate what in my life could be different. This year, over all, I decided to be happy. Be happy for myself and do what will make me happy. So far I have succeeded.
I am delieriously happy; overwhelmingly happy. I don't know if I've ever been this truly happy. I am happy with my life and the direction that I am moving in. I believe that I may have been happy at some point before now. But it was a contented type of happiness. I just assumed that I was happy, however in all actuality I was complacent. Now I am truly happy. Happy for my great relationship, happy for my life, happy for my home, happy for my pagan group, just happy.
I know that happiness is not eternal, and soon I will reach a peak then begin to slowly decline. But I will never forget how happy I am now and how happy I can be.

I am procrastinating. Nothing is new about that. I have to clean bones tomorrow. It is a disgusting, smelly, thankless job. Today I have to do a bunch of assignments and a couple of papers and a test... At least I don't have class today!
My dad told me a couple of nights ago what my Christmas present will be... He has been finding skulls and trying to clean them to give me more for my collection. I've never been more excited for Christmas or more proud of my dad. My family finally gets me! I am more than willing to receive my present frozen and take the time to clean them myself. From the sounds of it he has a fair amount of skulls to add to my collection (raccoon, fox, and squirrel). So far both my mother and little brother have been frightened by the tree that my dad is hanging the skulls in to dry. I love Christmas...
In other news, Thanksgiving is this week. I will be staying in Raleigh from Wed. to Sat. and will not have a lot of internet access. There may be pictures on facebook from the exciting adventures of my family, but probably not.
My parents seem to really like Lance. They met him sooner than I had anticipated, but c'est la vie. Last night Lance, Dad and myself went to get pizza. Lance and I split a pizza that was overloaded with toppings. I got a long island iced tea that had WAY too much sweet and sour mix for my taste but it was alright. I'm glad that things went so well this weekend, I was (honestly) expecting the worst.
For the record, I study better while Harry Potter is on in the background... I need to buy the movies to help get me through the end of the semester...

I don't have too much time to write because my parents are in town, but I did want to say how incredibly happy I am.
Lance makes me feel happy, beautiful, safe, and aware of how wonderful even simple things can be. It feels good to be this happy and I wish everyone in the world could feel as happy as I feel.

Yes this is from MLIA... if you haven't checked it out you definitely should
"Today, I walked into my apartment and saw someone sitting on my couch, dressed as Megatron. I screamed for my boyfriend, who then came running out of the kitchen dressed as Optimus Prime, and threw Megatron to the ground. My boyfriend then came up to me and told me that he would fight decepticons for me any day. He then got down on one knee and proposed to me. I accepted. I don't know how I'm going to explain this proposal to my parents. MLIA."

After reading Lance's post about how I really am a geek I wanted to see if my definition of "geek" fit the most typical definitions.... so I googled it....
After reading through a substantial amount of crap (To which I said "Nay! I am no geek by these definitions!) Wikipedia bitch slapped my in the face with this one:
"A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest. This definition is very broad but because many of these interests have mainstream endorsement and acceptance, the inclusion of some genres as "geeky" is heavily debated. Persons have been labeled as or chosen to identify as physics geeks, mathematics geeks, engineering geeks, sci-fi geeks, computer geeks, various science geeks, movie and film geeks (cinephile), comic book geeks, theatre geeks, history geeks, music geeks, art geeks, philosophy geeks, literature geeks, historical reenactment geeks, 2012 geeks, video game geeks, and roleplay geeks."
According to this wiki article I am not only a geek but TWO different types of geek... However let it be known that my geek status is waaay more cool than yours. According to wiki I would be a Vampire Geek and a Zombie Geek... Best Geek title EVER.
*For the record I do not believe everything I read on Wikipedia. Find me a scholarly source that defines "geek" and if I fit the description... we'll talk. Til then, I am not a geek.

Thank you to Cristen for introducing me to MLIA (recently) and MC Chris (hella long ago) I've had:
MC Chris' "Fett's Vette" has been stuck in my head all day... So now I share with you just in case you've never experienced this crazy song.
My Life Is Average is a great website. You should check it out. Here is one that I truly love and take to heart:
"Today, my six year old daughter told me, with a serious face, that she firmly believes the black plague was a cover-up for a zombie apocalypse."
This will TOTALLY be my kid.
I also really enjoyed (and spent about 2hours reading....):
- "Today I told my husband I am pregnant. His response? We should talk to the baby for the first 3 years of it's life in a British accent, just so it can adapt it and be the cool kid at school. I knew I picked the right guy."
- "Today, my mom got an email from my brother's music teacher informing her that he had failed the last test. There was only one question on the test, which read "list three jobs that require music." Most kids wrote down jobs like choreographer, musician, etc. My brother's answers? Ice cream man, pole dancer, stripper. He's in 3rd grade. MLIA"
-"Today, my brother in-law was talking about an albino squirrel he had seen at work. My 6 year old daughter told me if she had seen it, she would have thought it was a zombie, and hit it with a shovel. Glad to know she is prepared. MLIA"
- "Today, I was looking for a picture of Waldo on the internet so I could draw a picture of him. I searched on Google Images and found a picture of him that looked like it would be a good reference. When I clicked on the picture to enlarge it, it said that the webpage could not be found. You win this time, Waldo. MLIA."
- "Today my friends and I were talking about the first times our boyfriends said "I love you". They all had really mushy and conventional stories. My boyfriend told me he loved me after I won an argument regarding whether or not Anakin Skywalker was the chosen one. MLIA."
- "Today, at work in an emergency room, I had to help a boy who had dislocated 3 fingers and his wrist. When I asked him how he had done it, he looked around the room suspiciously to make sure no one was listening and whispered, "It's guitar-hero related, lets leave it at that." Made my day. MLIA"
- "Today, I was walking with my little brother down the street and we saw an open manhole cover. Being a huge fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, he leaned over and yelled, "TURTLE POWER!". I was worried that he would be crushed when nothing happened, but then I heard, "COWABUNGA DUDE!". He got so excited, he peed his pants. Thank you, mystery manhole guy, you made my day."
- "Today, I was walking along and a girl pointed out my gray hair and asked why because I'm still a teenager. I convinced her that I'm really 43 in Hawaiian years and that we age faster because we're closer to the equator and thus go around the world faster. She said she was so sorry that I was going to miss out on life. I have no idea how I kept such a straight face. MLIA"
- "Recently we had a lockdown drill at school, so we had to turn off all the lights, close the curtains and go into a corner. We were in music class, and all ended up under/near a piano. Someone reached up and started playing the Jaws theme on the piano, and when it finally reached its climax the school bell rang and startled several people, even making a girl scream. Lockdown well spent? I think so. MLIA"
- "Today I was listening to Cookie Monster talk about eating cookies. I listened more intently and realized that Cookie Monster sounds an awful lot like Yoda. I looked it up, and he IS Yoda. Best. Mentor. Ever. MLIA."
okay you get the point. go. view. submit. oh and one more thing:
if your brain hasn't oozed out of your head yet, it will.... just give it time! k thanks bye!

Your soul has touched me unlike any other soul has. I am terrified of falling because I have already started the slow decline. Lest I become too verbose let me pose this question:
With the exception that perhaps souls do not exist, could my soul have once touched yours and is merely touching it again?
You and I share a different connection. If I am just sex or just a friend or just a shoulder or even just a sounding board... let me know. I do not want to be captivated in free fall only to find the ground too close for comfort.

I want to know you.
I'm so afraid.
I want you to touch me.
I'm in darkness.
I want to feel you.
I'm trembling.
I want to hear you.
I'm in silence
I want to experience you.
I'm lost
I want to love you.
Please don't hurt me.
I want to please you.
I'm hiding; alone.
I want you to see me.
Find me. Release me.
I want to not have to want.
Show me the true you
Let me know you
touch you
feel you
hear you
experience you
love you
please you
see you
know you
fuck you
be with you
This darkness will entwine both and in it's snare drag us deep within
Hiding
Longing
Crying
Laughing
Touching
Release.
I am finally Happy.
but there is a nightmare on the horizon.
i can feel it eating at me
though i cannot see the cause.
Can life be fulfilling
with a sense of danger
lurking, ever present,
beneath the calming sea.
Is it just Fear
that captivates and perpetuates
the cycle of the malaise.

Earlier this year one of my ex-boyfriends was found guilty of 3 counts of indecent liberties with a minor. He was released (I think) on Dec. 25. He now has to register on the state-wide sex offender database. We all do stupid things but I don't think that there are any excuses for this type of behavior. Criminal behavior is ridiculous. One of Sean's friends is extremely intelligent, I'm not talking just very smart this guy has the potential to be a nobel prize winner or some other notable person. However, this friend just wastes away his days getting as fucked up as possible and screwing every female possible. He doesn't have any ambition. So many of the students here at Western are the same way. My generation is filled with potential, the problem is the ratio of potential and lazy to potential and motivated is so out of wack that it will be hard for the motivated people to get over the laziness. I've heard the talks all of my life, "You have so much potential but you never act on it," well now I'm trying and my generation is holding me back.
Ok, I think I'm done ranting for now.
